Fast-packing Tour du Mont Blanc

Fast-packing Tour du Mont Blanc

Recently, I have experienced my very first fastpacking around the loop of Tour du Mont Blanc, total of 170km in a span of 4.5 days. This adventure had been amazing and unforgettable for me. I have received a lot of questions regarding my trip as well as some important information I do want to share base on this experience so here we go!

Most of the time, the public would choose to do the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) trip between Mid June to Mid September. The high season would be in July and August time where temperature is a lot more moderate and warm. Please be minded that in Mid June, there might still be some ice crossing sections and in late September, many aid points or refuges would be closed due to the lowered temperature.

Duration

Generally speaking, the entire TMB is divided into 11 different stages (roughly around 10-15km per stage), starting from Les Houches and most would choose to do it in the anti-clockwise direction going from France to Italy to Switzerland and back to France. Based on your physiques, could you choose to do several stages in one day or separate them. In my experience, I covered between 20-40km per day and finished the loop within 4.5 days. Please note that, if you are not using luggage transport service, you do have to carry your gear for all these days and you are doing high cardio load activity for a few consecutive days so please evaluate your body condition before deciding the duration of the trip.

Refuges 山屋

I have opted my sleeping option as staying in refuges/huts so I do not have to worry about carrying camping supplies or the extra weight for the sleeping situation. If you do plan on stopping at big towns, may you also choose to stay in more well equipped hotels if this is what you prefer.

  • How long ago should you reserve for the refuges?
    • Depending on when you are going, generally you should still book it as early as possible to secure a spot at the better refuges. From September onwards where the hiking season is closing, more and more refuges would also stop operating so you would have more limited choices where for high season (July-August), demand is high so it is more difficult to secure a spot at the refuges. Personally, I am going alone in Mid-September which has already passed the high season but I still booked the refuges 1.5 months ahead whereas some other people would book it 4-5 months ahead still.

    • Most of the time, I would highly recommend you to book the refuge along with dinner and breakfast included so you do not have to worry about carrying food options. Besides, the food at the refuges are surprisingly good. Honestly, after a long day, you would not want to worry about cooking so simply opt for the food they provide and it is also a great opportunity to meet new people and share your experiences with each other.
    • Most refuges would require you to store your trekking poles and hiking shoes in the locker room whilst providing you slides to wear indoor. If you do not want to share the slides, should you bring your own ones.
    • Please keep a set of loungewear specifically dedicated to wear in the hut to keep yourself comfortable and fresh.
    • Since you will probably be arriving in the hut between 3-5pm during the day and dinner time wouldn’t start until 6.30-7pm, Internet or signals are sometimes not reliable either, so ensure you bring a book or something to entertain yourself when you relax in the hut.
    • English is workable for most places but do not expect it to be a universal language. I personally also speak French which is very useful throughout the trip. However, I do notice some refuges would not be having staff that could speak fluent English so just something to note for if you do come across with some issues that you would want to communicate with the people working there.
